January 13 | 6:30 PM St. Catherine’s Church, Vilnius
Let the “Chords of Memory for Peace” be heard
Another Defender of Freedom Day is approaching in Lithuania, sadly at a time when the clatter of weapons is growing ever louder around the world. The fear that this ominous cacophony might drown out the voice of reason and the heart—calling us to stand in defense of freedom and peace—encourages us to unite in true solidarity. As always, the impulse comes from uplifting music, which on January 13 acquires a sacred meaning.
On this special day, at St. Catherine’s Church in Vilnius, music will be performed by the Vilnius St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra (artistic director Modestas Barkauskas), the Vilnius Cultural Centre Women’s Choir Liepos (artistic director Audronė Steponavičiūtė Zupkauskienė), and the Ąžuolų Klubas Men’s Choir (artistic director Professor Povilas Gylys).
The concert will open with the men’s choir performing Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ cantata De Profundis (“Out of the Depths”). This will be followed by Benedetto Marcello’s Psalm 18 Caeli enarrant (“The Heavens Declare”), sung by the women’s choir Liepos and soloist Jūratė Bielinytė-Bareikė (soprano). To conclude, the audience will hear George Frideric Handel’s cantata Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, also known as the Ode for Peace. This work—testifying that the power of peace, which endures all trials over time, is truly invincible—will be performed by both choirs and a distinguished group of soloists: Salomėja Petronytė (soprano), Nora Petročenko (mezzo-soprano), Vaidas Bartušas (countertenor), Nerijus Masevičius (bass-baritone), and Loreta Kuliešiuvienė (harpsichord).
The concert conductors are Audronė Steponavičiūtė Zupkauskienė and Povilas Gylys.
Concert begins at 6:30 PM.
Free admission – registration required.
