The Vilnius City Municipality St Christopher Chamber Orchestra has long-standing friendships with many Lithuanian composers, but one of its closest friends is Algirdas Martinaitis, a winner of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts who is celebrating his 75th birthday this year. One of Lithuania’s most influential composers in the late 20th – early 21st century, he is an artist of exceptional talent who masterfully combines contemporary musical language and deep musicality in his work. Martinaitis is sometimes called the “bird whisperer” due to his deep connection with nature.

The third concert of Vilnius Spring Festival 2025 will feature an original programme of both well-known and new compositions by Algirdas Martinaitis performed by the St Christopher Chamber Orchestra. The programme will include Europeana, Birds of Eden for string orchestra, the magical Distant Song with lyrics by Oscar Milosz, and Waiting for F. Schubert for violin, piano and string orchestra. There will also be two premieres: The Elixir of Love for soprano, piano and orchestra with lyrics by Marcelijus Martinaitis, and G@V (postlude) for piano and string orchestra.
