SYMPHONY FROM JERUSALEM OF THE NORTH
|
The 2021 is the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust which is being commemorated worldwide. To mark this painful anniversary, one of the most promising composers of the younger generation in Lithuania, Jievaras Jasinskis, and shofarist Tadas Daujotas are going to present a bespoke music project “Symphony from Jerusalem of the North”. This contemporary symphony is unique and one of its kind. It will showcase classical music intertwined with Lithuanian and Hebrew folklore motifs. The hour-long musical journey will be performed by the Vilnius city St Christopher Chamber Orchestra, wooden wind quartet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and Hebrew and Lithuanian folk instruments – birbynė, lumzdelis, kanklės, oud, Persian tar, saz, Cretan lyra, hurdy-gurdy and ancient Hebrew horns – shofars. The project also brings in Yaron Cherniak from Israel, multi-instrumentalist playing string instruments from the Middle East, Boris Kirzner, a violinist of Jewish descent from Lithuania, and other classical, jazz, and folk performers. |
Once, a large Jewish community lived in the capital of Lithuania, so Vilnius earned the name Jerusalem of the North. The idea of “Symphony from Jerusalem of the North” is to show how close the history of Lithuanians and Jews is intertwined, so we invite everyone to join us on a musical journey, during which we will witness the most important moments of Israel and Lithuania’s history. The Goal of the project
In implementing the Holocaust’s 80th anniversary music project, we seek to honour the memory of Jews living in Lithuania, express solidarity to the Jewish community, and use artistic means of expression to fight against modern forms of anti-Semitism.
